 Hilaria Supa Huamán Visits Allentown

by Joe DeRaymond

Hilaria Supa Huamán at Muhlenberg

On Tuesday, April 29, 2008, Peruvian Congresswoman Hilaria Supa Huamán gave a presentation on "Environmental, Economic, and Human Rights Issues in Peru Today", in the Seegers Great Room at Muhlenberg College. About 75 students, faculty, and guests attended, with a generous representation from the Lehigh Valley Peruvian community. Israel Arcelay, of the Allentown Mayor’s office, was present to recognize Hilaria’s presence and give greetings from the people of Allentown.

Hilaria told of her years growing up in the Quechua indigenous community of Wayllaqocha, Anta, in the Cusco region of Peru. It was an existence poor in material terms, where the people were the slaves to the landowners. Yet, the Quechua culture is rich in its respect for the Earth, for Nature, and while they did not have television and were not saturated with media, she remembers vividly nights under the stars listening to the oral traditions of the Quechua as related by her grandfather.

The people of the region were viciously oppressed by the rich white owners. The government, with the financial assistance of the United States, Japan, the European Union and the World Bank, started a sterilization campaign, on the theory that if there were fewer poor, there would be less poverty. 300,000 women and 20,000 men were sterilized, often without consent during eye or dental surgery. Many are still in pain and disabled from these forced surgeries. She herself was wheelchair bound for seven years after the birth of her daughter.

Hilaria went to the city as a young woman, learned Spanish, worked hard, went to school, and converted her understanding of life as a poor woman to a life of organizing and struggle for women and all people. She has been a force for land reform, for women’s rights and indigenous rights in Peru. She wrote a book, "Threads of My Life - The Story of Hilaria Supa Huaman, A Rural Quechua Woman" Theytus Books, B.C., Canada. 2008.

She won election to the Peruvian Congress as a member of the Union for Peru Party, for a 5 year term from 2006 – 2011. She is very engaged in fighting the assaults against the environment by mining and other corporations that are contaminating Peru with heavy metals. She stated that the Free Trade Agreement with the United States discrriminates in favor of large corporations, that big business benefits not the people, and that Peru cannot compete with the United States and the technological and subsidy advantages enjoyed by US corporations.

Hilaria Supa Huamán brought a breath of humanity to Allentown on Tuesday, and we have been given notice of a quiet, dignified force for change on this planet, who deserves our attention and support. Viva Peru!      -Joe DeRaymond

-Joe DeRaymond
